Punith was born with an shortened left hand and started swimming in 2011 since his doctor recommended it as a part of therapy.
His father is a retired Central Airforce officer and both his parents have been extremely supportive. Punith is currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering from BMS College, Bangalore while managing his time effectively between sports and academics.
He has participated in 6 National Championships since 2012 and has won a medal in all of them. He trains for 11 sessions in a week and for the past 2 years is being coached by his idol and role model, Sharath M Gayakwad - a para swimmer himself.
He is currently ranked 2nd nationally in his category and is highly dedicated. He considers swimming to be more than just a sport and is likely to be a part of the Indian relay team participating in the Para Asian Games as he crossed the MQS (Minimum Qualification Standard) in the individual event.
