Born to a family of modest means, Ramkaran Singh hails from a small village in Uttar Pradesh. The UP boy was bursting crackers aged 5, when splinters flew into his eyes leaving him with impaired vision overall. He subsequently moved to New Delhi and enrolled himself into a school for blind boys, where he could be a part of the school’s sports programme and pursue his passion.
He has won silver medals in the 800m event at the Para Asian Games in 2010 and 2014. However, due to the 800m category being removed from the upcoming 2016 Paralympics Games in Rio, Ramkaran has had to make the transition to the longer 1500m event to be eligible to compete. He, unfortunately, did not make it to the Rio Paralympics but represented India at the 2017 IPC World Para Athletics Championships in London.
