Varun is one of India’s top para high jumpers. Hailing from a reasonably well-to-do family, Varun has made great progress in his sport. Afflicted by Polio at an early age, he took up sport in his school days, and has been consistently getting better.
With a Bachelor’s degree from Delhi University in Mathematics, Varun has represented India at various international events. He had registered the `A` qualification mark for the 2012 Paralympics in London with a performance of 1.60m, but narrowly missed selections to the Games. He also represented India at the 2014 Asian Para Games in Incheon, and the 2015 IPC World Para Athletics Championship in Doha, where he had performed better than more established Indian para high jumpers such as HN Girisha and Sharad Kumar.
Varun however came to the limelight at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio where he clinched the bronze medal in the High Jump event. He followed that up with another bronze at the 2017 IPC World Para Athletics Championship in London.
