Ekta Bhyan

In 2003, Ekta met with a road accident that injured her spinal cord, resulting in paralysis of her lower body. She started playing sports in 2014 as a means to get physically fit. The turning point for her was when she met fellow para athlete Amit Kumar Saroha, who motivated and trained her in club and discus throw events. Two operations and several months in rehabilitation had made Ekta stronger than before. Her grit and determination led her to a silver medal at the IPC Para Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin in 2016. Ekta has also commendably balanced the rigours of her sport with her academic aspirations. She has completed her post-graduation in English and currently works for the Haryana Government. Ekta represented India in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in Club throw event and finished 6th in the competition. Ekta represented India at the Asian Para Games 2022 in the Women's Club Throw event and clinched the Bronze medal with an Asian Record in her category. Ekta also created the Asian Record in the Women’s Discus Throw at the Asian Para Games 2022 in her Category. Ekta is a highly revered athlete in the Indian sporting fraternity, paving the way for several young athletes and serving as a spokesperson for the persons-with-disabilities community in India. Her efforts have seen her receive the National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in 2018 and the State Award by Honourable Governor of Haryana on Women's Day, 2019.
