Jyoti Balyan

As a child she was administered the wrong injection on her leg when she was suffering from a viral fever, which then resulted in her being infected with polio. Jyoti belongs to a modest background. Her family comprises her mother, who is a housewife, one elder brother and a sister. Since she lost her father a few years ago, she is supported by her cousin sister who is also a national level archer. Her father initially wanted her to follow the footsteps of her sister, and pursue volleyball, but due to her medical condition, she couldn’t play the sport and eventually shifted towards Para-Archery. She started her career in 2010, when her coach opened a local archery academy and was on the lookout for para-archers. She is currently the top archer in her category in India. Her proudest moment in life was when she cinched the gold medal in the National Championships in Orissa, beating able-bodied archers. Jyoti recorded a spirited showing in Tokyo 2020, competing in her debut Paralympics. She has followed that up with some impressive results, including winning a silver medal in the mixed team event at the Dubai Para Archery Championship, 2022 partnering with Shyam Sundar and Team bronze at 2023 World Archery Para Championships. We are sure she will continue to make strides in her sport.
