A Beginner’s Guide to Using Debit Cards

Posted on Friday, July 29th, 2022 | By IndusInd Bank

Debit cards are a great way of spending your money on purchases without the hassle of paying in cash and without taking on a debt as in the case of credit cards. Debit cards allow you to make transactions at online and offline stores and withdraw cash at ATMs. These cards are linked to your account and only allow transactions only up to the amount of money that you have in your bank account.

These cards come with a PIN  that you need to enter every time you need to authorize a transaction. It is very important to keep this PIN secure and to never share it with anyone, even your own bank.

How do you use a Debit card?

Using debit cards, you can either pay for goods that you purchase online or offline.

For online payments, you will need to enter your card details manually when prompted to make a payment. These details will include:

  • Sixteen digit card number (printed on the front of the card)
  • The cardholder’s name
  • The card network provider (like VISA or MasterCard)
  • The date of expiry (also printed on the front of the card)

Once you have entered your card’s details, you will also be required to furnish your card’s CVV number. CVV (short for Card Verification Value) is usually a 3-digit number that is printed on the back of your card. It proves that you are in physical possession of your card and is an additional safety feature to prevent financial frauds.

Finally once all these details are entered, you will be prompted to provide you pin number or an OTP that you receive in your mobile to process the transaction and that’s it.

In order to make this process faster the second time around, many online stores prompt you to save your card’s details securely. Use your own discretion while saying yes to this feature.

When purchasing goods offline one simply has to swipe their card at the merchant and enter their PIN number to authenticate a transaction.

Now-a-days, most debit cards come with a tap and pay feature wherein the card only needs to be tapped on the swipe machine at a merchant and the transactions are processed without even having to provide the PIN. Currently, the upper limit for these transactions is set at Rs. 5,000. For Transactions above Rs 5000, you will need to validate the transaction with a One time Password.
